    The occurrence of systemic lupus erythematosus has been only rarely reported in patients with sickle-cell disease. We describe the case of a 23-year-old North-African woman with sickle-cell disease and systemic lupus erythematosus, and discuss the pointers to the diagnosis of this combination of conditions and also present a review of literature. Irreversible retinal damage observed in some patients who had received hydroxychloroquine sulfate; significant risk factors for retinal damage include daily doses of hydroxychloroquine sulfate greater than 6.5 mg/kg 5 mg/kg base of actual body weight, durations of use greater than five years, subnormal glomerular filtration. Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.
