Hydroxychloroquine HCQ, a commonly used antimalarial drug in rheumatic diseases, has shown favorable metabolic effects on both glucose control and lipid profiles. We describe a case of a young woman with type 1 diabetes whose glycemic control was optimized. Dosage for Plaquenil. The adult dose of Plaquenil to suppress malaria is 400 mg on the same day each week. The pediatric weekly suppressive dosage is 5 mg/kg of body weight. The adult dose of Plaquenil to treat an acute attack of malaria is an initial dose of 800 mg followed by 400 mg in six to eight hours and 400 mg for two more days. Hydroxychloroquine along with 30 mg of Prednisone worked for me within 3 months and did a great job. However I had a side reaction- hallucination, so I came off the drug. Plaquenil did not work as well for me,it took about 10 weeks before I saw some effect but again I had a reaction- my fatigue got even worse and I could not stay awake.

This medication is also used, usually with other medications, to treat certain auto-immune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) when other medications have not worked or cannot be used. Discuss the most recent information with your doctor before traveling to areas where malaria occurs.

Taking Plaquenil for Rheumatoid Arthritis Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is considered an older DMARD disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug. Plaquenil was actually first classified as an antimalarial drug, but it is also used to treat certain rheumatic and autoimmune conditions which are unrelated to malaria.
