    Difference between methotrexate and plaquenil

Yesterday my rheumatologist started me on hydroxychloroquine as well. Is anyone else on this combination and have you had any problems with it as I know hydroxychloroquine can cause eye sight problems.

Patients who have diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis as per American College of Rheumatology aged between 18 and 60 years were recruited and randomized to receive leflunomide 10 mg/day p.o. or a combination of methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine 7.5 mg/week p.o. and 200 mg/day p.o. respectively along with folate supplementation for 12 weeks. I do know that plaquenil is generally considered the least invasive drug, generally prescribed as the first line of treatment. Methotrexate is the most commonly prescribed DMARD, but it does come with the chance of side-effects. I never had any side-effects of dire consequence, but many on this forum have. The doctor then kept me on my plaquenil and added Leflunomide Arava to replace the methotrexate. My mouth sores went away and I quit having the days of sickness from the methotrexate. There may be something better out there, but for me the Arava has made a big difference.

Recently my eyes have felt sore and, after posting a question on this site, I am seeing my GP on Monday. Thanks Hi Catjones I have been taking this combination, started on both of them in January this year.

  7. Was the plaquenil controlling your RA symptoms? The trouble is you lose hair on Methotrexate too. But after losing heaps when I first went on it, I have stabalised now, I have thinner hair but it still looks fine and healthy. If plaq was working for your symptoms I'd go back on it. If you feel like the RA is escallating then go for mtx.

Lung inflammation was not improving enough so Pulmonary Dr. and Rheumy increased plaquenil to 600 mg and 60 mg of predisone. I continued to have lung issues and was unable to reduce prednisone below 40mg without flare up so they added 17.5 mg of methotrexate. My prednisone dose is now down to alternating days of 20 mg/0mg. Hello hope everyone is well just a quick question, i have been on methotrexate for 2 months increasing from 7.5 to 15 and now to 25mg.weekly now been given plaquenil 400mg daily, has anyone else been on this mixture and has it worked or how long should i wait to see if it works. In defense of your ophthalmologist, the eye problems with Plaqueni, although rare are dose related. Comparison of Plaquenil and methotrexate is difficult. Both drugs are very well tolerated and have different side effects, but if you have other medical problems, one drug might be better for you and you should discuss this with your rheumatologist.
