Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Lupus Support Group. Lupus is an auto-immune disease in which the immune system cannot distinguish between threats like viruses and bacteria, and healthy cells and tissue. As a result, the body produces antibodies that inflict cell damage, most commonly targeting joints, skin, kidneys and the nervous system. Plaquenil is a slow-acting drug, meaning that it can take up to 6 months to experience the full benefits of this medication, but it is possible for symptoms to improve in as few as 1 or 2 months. Plaquenil and other antimalarials are the key to controlling lupus long-term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives. Like in lupus, symptoms may come and go and you may experience periods of remission. Unfortunately in about 13% of patients, the MCTD will progress in spite of treatment. This being said, the outcome for MCTD is usually very good. There are many feelings that go along with learning to cope with a chronic illness and they are all normal.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

  4. Nov 08, 2011 All my blood tests are neg for lupus, I do however have a 5cm mass of inflammed cells in my subcataneous fat, it's a type of panniculitis, that's not a typical lupus panni. I can't be the only one figuring out that there's no such thing as "typical lupus"

I started showing signs of lupus when I was 10 years old. Doctors didn’t want to diagnose me with anything because they told my mother it would be to dire. Both of my grandmothers had it, two of my aunts have it, and even my own father shows symptoms. When I turned 18 I had a lot of blood work done. Results may indicate you have anemia, which commonly occurs in lupus. A low white blood cell or platelet count may occur in lupus as well. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate. This blood test determines the rate at which red blood cells settle to the bottom of a tube in an hour. A faster than normal rate may indicate a systemic disease, such as lupus. I need advice. I'm 100% sure I have Lupus but my blood test are normal. Does everyone with lupus have abnormal blood test I have all the symptoms with the ecception of my blood. not sure what to do now. I've been trying to find out what is wrong with me for over a year now. I'm tired of going to the dr.
